Over 769 kg of cocaine seized by the security forces of the country as well as the judicial process concluded were destroyed at the Suraweera warehouse in Maguruwela, Kelania, under the inspection of President Maithripala Sirisena, today (01st).

Under the guidance of the President and the direction of the Police Narcotics Bureau these cocaine was destroyed according to the international standards.

This process was conducted under the total scrutiny of the Colombo Chief Magistrate and the Mount Lavinia Chief Magistrate and with the participation of officials from the Police Narcotics Bureau, National Dangerous Drugs Control Board and Government Analyst’s Department. The opportunity was given to the public to view this event live.

After a proper examination, the drugs were destroyed by putting into tanks that contain chemicals, and those tanks will be taken to the premise of the Puttalam Cement Corporation, under the protection of the Police to destroy them.

This programme is being implemented under the instructions of the President to provide a solution for the question among the public as to what will happen to seized drugs by the Police.

The drug that was seized in the country was publicly destroyed today. They were, on June 21, 2016, 301 kilograms and 235 Grams of cocaine found in the container yard in Orugodawatte, on the 9th of November 2016, 31 kilograms and 844 grams cocaine found in the Pethiyagoda area in Kelaniya, on November 24th, 2016, 219 kilograms and 950 grams of cocaine seized at Orugodawatta and on June19th, 2018, 216 Kilograms and 435 grams of cocaine were seized at the Economic Center in Ratmalana.

After observing the event, President Sirisena said that the targeted program to eradicate the illicit drug trafficking is being successfully implemented.

President said that he has taken steps to bring in high-tech equipment which is being used by the developed countries of the world to identify illegal drug trafficking in the country next month.

Also, the President said that the death penalty will be implementing in the future against drug trafficking perpetrators.

Minister Ms. Thalatha Athukorala, State Minister Mr. Ajith Mannapperuma, Mr. Ranjan Ramanayake, Member of Parliament Mr. Mahinda Amaraweera, Mr. Lasantha Alagiyawanna, Mr. Chathura Senarathne, Governor of Western Province Mr. Azad Sali, IGP Mr. Pujitha Jayasundara and number of Security Heads were also participated in this occasion.
