The President's Fund is a multi-faceted institution with a range of activities that include help for urgent medical needs; the support of scholarship and tertiary education; advance of religion; and recognition of service to the nation .
It is best known as an oasis of relief for those in need of urgent surgery and other medical treatment beyond one's reach in cost.
The Fund which was established in 1978, in keeping with its vision, has continued to provide relief and assistance under successive President's of Sri Lanka.
Following a review of the Fund's activities in 1994 it was decided to lay special emphasis in the disbursement of funds to key areas such as health and education, particularly with a view to providing access to the needy and deprived sections of the population for specialized health care and opportunities for advanced education.
The President's Fund has two primary sources of funding;
a) proceeds from the Development Lottery
b) income from investments made by the Fund and lying in fixed deposits in banks.
Another source is donations from philanthropists and well-wishers who appreciate the service rendered by the Fund.

From 1995 up to 31 July 2006 indicate the emphasis on health related needs.
A total of 30,891 patients were helped in this period at a cost of Rs. 4,761 million.
The total expenditure by the President's Fund from 1995 to 30 April 2006 was Rs. 7,129.6 million.
With assistance it provides to those in need, particularly for in health and scholarship, the President's Fund of Sri Lanka is both a worthy and satisfying institution to benefit from donations by those who value its work and wish to see it expand the assistance in these spheres of need.
