Steps will be taken to hold a National Environmental Conference in Sri Lanka at the beginning of next year, President Maithripala Sirisena said.

The President further said that all those who love the environment, including the environmental scientists, writers, literates, University students, school students can participate in this Conference.

He made these remarks participating at the President’s Environmental Medals awarding ceremony, at the President’s House in Colombo, today (22).

President Sirisena said that the new Government is strongly committed to protect the environment for our future generations as it has recognized the importance of environment. He further said that Sri Lanka is way ahead than many developed countries in the world when formulating policies and strategies in sustainable development, Green economy as well as the innovative economy.

The President said that the government plans to appreciate and honour all those who protect the environment with a commitment at in the National Environmental Conference, which is to hold in the next year. The support of everyone is expected for the implementation of a broad national program to protect the environment, he added.

It is the national responsibility of everyone to protect the environment and nourish it, the President said that adding it cannot be enforced through the laws, but our good values which are coming from our ancient traditions are stronger than the existing laws.

The President had expressed his happiness over the opening of the President’s House in Colombo for school children as well as for the state functions and said that his aim is not to spend money and live lavishly at the President’s House, but to preserve our ancient heritage for future generations.

This was the fifth time the Central Environment Authority organized this awarding ceremony.

The President pinned medals on 71 Presidential medal recipients and presented souvenirs to two teachers for their immense contribution to the field of environment.

Anuradha Jayaratne- Deputy Minister of Mahaweli Development and Environment, Prof. Lal Mervin Dharmasiri- Chairman of Central Environmental Authority, school children, parents and others participated in the event.
