President Maithripala Sirisena today (March 22) conferred General Sarath Fonseka, the former army commander, to the rank of Field Marshal, Sri Lanka’s highest military rank. President Maithripala Sirisena presided the ceremony held at the Defence Ministry ground.
General Sarath Fonseka, the then army commander, led the Sri Lankan army to victory over the LTTE in 2009. He was promoted to the rank of General after the war victory.
Speaking at the function, President Maithripala Sirisena noted that ensuring justice for the former army commander was a responsibility undertaken by the government in the quest for justice for the whole of the army.
Field Marshal is the highest military rank in Sri Lanka and Gen. Sarath Fonseka is the first Sri Lankan to be promoted to the rank. Field Marshal is historically given for extraordinary military achievement.
