President Maithripala Sirisena says he would never allow breaking the trust of the people who elected the new government.

“The responsibility of all political parties is to support the government’s program disregarding their political ideologies”, he said.

The President was speaking at a public meeting held today (Jan. 01) at the Alihar Playground in Eravur.

“Those who used state income, state property and the treasury for their personal needs are trying to come to power use them again. Nobody can change the government till the people would elect new one at an election to be held after five years”, he added.

“The current government is not years old government. It started only two years ago. As a new government there’s time to perform its duties. But we will execute our duties for the country and the people today itself”, he stated.

The President said Sri Lanka will be built as a developed country, moving forward as a strong government and always ready to listen to the voice of the poor people of Sri Lanka.

“The people elected a new government for not to see the same corruption and fraud done by the former government. According to the people’s need, I will have to take decisions on the actions done by the members of the former government as well as the current government”, the President emphasized.

The public meeting was organized under the theme ‘Third Year of Sustainable Era – Eastern Province Public Meeting’. Granting of housing loans, offering ownerships of houses were implemented at this occasion.

The President planted a mango sapling symbolizing inauguration of the program to deliver plants among the people.  

Opposition Leader R. Sampanthan, Ministers Rajitha Senaratne, Daya Gamage, People’s representatives of the Eastern Province, including Governor of the Eastern Province, Austin Fernando, Eastern Province Chief Minister Nazir Ahmed and the people in the area participated in this event.


President Maithripala Sirisena, who visited the Eastern Province in the morning today, made an inspection tour of several areas and looked into the educational needs of the children in the area. 


First, the President visited the Samanture Muslim Maha Vidyalaya.The children of the school warmly welcomed the President when he arrived at the school in an unexpected time and inquiring regarding the shortages of the school, he engaged in a cordial discussion with the students.


Later, the President visited the Mahmud Ladies College, Kalmunai and looked into the educational needs of the children in the school.


The school children apprise the President regarding getting a new auditorium l, constructing a ground as well as receiving computer facilities for the school and the President said that he will instruct the Minister of Education to take necessary steps in this regard.


The President also visited the Akkaraipattu Base Hospital and inquired about the shortages of the hospital and moreover, he engaged in a friendly discussion with the staff of the hospital.
