The Government and people of India are awaiting to welcome President Maithripala Sirisena, who will start his official visit to India this weekend, Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi said.
While stating that all arrangements are in place to welcome the newly elected President of Sri Lanka, Prime Minister Modi expressed that President Maithripala’s official visit to India will bring a new approach to the India – Sri Lanka ties.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed these views during a telephone conversation with President Maithripala Sirisena this (13) morning.
During this telephone conversation, Prime Minister Modi conveyed his best wishes to the Sri Lankan cricket team for the ICC Cricket World Cup – 2015, recalling Sri Lanka’s Cricket World Cup victory in 1996. President Maithripala also expressed his wishes to Indian cricket team.
President Maithripala Sirisena is scheduled to visit India from 15 – 18 February 2015 on an invitation of the Indian Premier. During this official visit, President Maithripala will also meet President of India Pranab Mukherjee, in addition to bilateral discussions with Indian Prime Minister. The President will also meet leaders of Indian political parties and other political figures.
President Maithripala will also attend religious observances at Bodh Gaya Temple and Tirupati Hindu Temple.
This is the first official foreign visit of President Maithripala Sirisena since he assumed office in January.
