First Interim Progress Report on the Project to nominate the Historical Copies of the Pali Tripitaka Palm-leaf Manuscripts in Sinhala Characters for Inscription on the UNESCO Memory of the World (MoW) Register as Documentary Heritage of the Mankind was presented to President Maithripala Sirisena at the President’s Office today (5).

The Theravada Tripitaka, the sacred scripture of Buddhists was declared as a National Heritage of Sri Lanka by President Sirisena on February 7, 2019.

On March 23rd, 2019 President handed over the proposal seeking to declare the Theravada Tripitaka as a UNESCO World Heritage to the UN Resident Coordinator in Sri Lanka, Hanaa Singer and a Committee of Experts was appointed to compile the nomination dossier for the inscription of the ” Historical Copies of the Pāli Tipitaka Palm- Leaf Manuscripts in Sinhala Characters” on the UNESCO Memory of the World (MoW) Register as Documentary Heritage of the Mankind.

The nomination form and the interim report prepared under the guidance of the Head of Pali and Buddhist Faculty at University of Sri Jayawardenepura Prof. Madagampitiya Vijitha Dhamma Thero were handed over to the President today.

Following a survey conducted for more than 5 months the Committee had identified temples and other institutional libraries that claimed to have complete or near-complete sets of manuscripts of texts of the Tripitaka.

During today’s event President said the responsibility to take forward the activities will be vested with responsible persons while adding that he will mediate to transform this noble task into a success in the future.

Chief of Staff H. M. P. Hitisekara, Committee Chairman and Additional Secretary Esala Weerakoon and the members of the Committee were present on the occasion.
