President Maithripala Sirisena says that he will appoint a new Central Bank Governor within the next few hours as the present Governor’s term of office will end tomorrow.

The President further said that taking into consideration the difficulties faced by the general public due to the enforcement of new tax systems, steps will be taken in the future to make amendments to the existing tax systems to provide relief to the public.

He made these remarks participating at the Badulla District National Kidney Disease Prevention Program held at the Girandurukotte Mahawali Stadium, today (29).

At the moment Circulars have been issued to give vehicle permits for public servants taking into the consideration their requests for vehicle permits, the President said.

The Government banned the imports and the use of Glyphosate when its harmful effects to the health of the people were revealed and currently research being undertaken to examine the standards of the alternatives to the Glyphosate, the President said. He added that if those alternatives also were found to be harmful, they too would be banned with immediate effect.

President Sirisena also said that he will take every possible step to prevent the kidney disease in the country which has become a social tragedy. The programme to provide clean and safe drinking water for the people who are living in areas that are vulnerable to the disease will be completed within the next year.

The President symbolically presented scholarships to ten A/L students whose parents were lost due to the kidney disease.

Many programmes were held under the patronage of the President including distribution of domestic water filtration equipment for low income families of kidney patients and donations of reverse osmosis plants for selected schools in the area and presenting awards for persons who are contributed in detecting kidney patients in the Badulla district.

The President also joined in observing an exhibition organized by the various institutions in collaboration with the Regional Directorate of Health Services – Badulla.

Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva,  State Minister,  Dilan Perera, Governor of Uva Province, M.P. Jayasinghe, Chief Minister Chamara Sampath Dasanayake, Thenuka Vidanagamage, MP, Uva Provincial Council Ministers , Additional Secretary to the President, Rohana Keerthi Dissanayake, Director of the Presidential Task Force on Prevention of Kidney Disease, Asela Iddawela,  State officials including Badulla District Secretary, Nimal Abeysinghe and many others participated in the event.

Subsequently, the President made a special observation tour to the Kidney Disease Treatment Centre at the Girandurukotte Base Hospital.
