The Sooriyawewa integrated community water supply and sanitation project constructed at Viharagala, Sooriyawewa was declared open by President Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday (Feb. 25). This project is considered as the largest community water project in South Asia.

The Rs.90 million project, which was constructed by the Urban Development and Sacred Area Development Ministry, will benefit 15,700 persons of 3000 families in Venivelaara, Mahapelessa, Viharagala, Bendigantota, Alioluaara and Beddeveva West in Sooriyawewa.

Addressing the gathering at the occasion, President Mahinda Rajapaksa said that the government took over the responsibility of facing the challenge of achieving development goals by laying confidence on the people’s strengths. Thus, in a very short period the government was able to fulfill the people’s development expectations, he said.

Noting that the country was at a standstill due to terrorism, the President stated that with the end to terrorism the government was able to expand development to the rural areas instead of limiting to the urban.
