President Maithripala Sirisena has instructed the officials of the Central Environmental Authority (CEA) to implement environment protection regulations impartially.

The President issued this directive, in his capacity as the Minister of Mahaweli Development and Environment, while addressing officials of CEA at their headquarters in Battaramulla this (19) afternoon.

“The duty and responsibility of all the officers is to implement laws to protect the environment. They should not attempt to favour any person, whatever the position the person holds to get undue advantages,” President said.

President Maithripala assured the protection for the officials, who abide by the law and regulations in performing their duties in an efficient manner. Further, he encouraged officials carry out their respective jobs with the mindset to serve the country, without giving into any external pressures.

The President also reviewed the progress of the projects undertaken by the CEA and discussed challenges experienced during the implementation stage. He instructed the relevant officers to propose solutions to overcome such challenges and issues, by analyzing them in detail.

During this discussion, President Maithripala highlighted the need to solve two major issues namely, spreading of mosquitoes and recycling of garbage, both long-overdue subject matters. The President instructed the Officials to address these issues to provide better living conditions for urban communities.

President Maithripala also planted a sapling at the CEA premises to mark his visit.
