Measures are currently underway to introduce facial recognition technology to identify criminals, the Department of Police said.

The system will be established by linking database systems of Sri Lanka police, Department of Immigration and Emigration, Sri Lanka Telecom and the Department of Registration of Persons. Accordingly, the information of those involved in crimes and those fleeing from the law will be included in the system allowing any police officer to identify a suspect from anywhere in the country using his smart mobile phone.

This details were revealed during a between President Maithripala Sirisena and senior officials of the Department of Police held at the President’s Office today (29).

The new program was implemented as part of the steps taken by the President after taking over the Police Department under him to establish a quality and advanced police service, developing human resources and physical resources.

Meanwhile, the methodology implemented to minimize accidents at railway crossings was also discussed.

It has been stated that there are about 280 protected railway crossings with safety gates in the country and another 344 crossings are covered by the Bell and Light system. It is also planned to implement the Bell and Light system for the remaining 539 unprotected railway crossings.

Attention was also been paid to the need of constructing official quarters for police officers and the progress on the construction of new police stations including Kilinochchi, Mankulam, Jaffna, Point Pedro, Oddusudan, Mullaitivu, Mallavi police stations and the Senior DIG’s office in Jaffna.

It has been discussed to allocate Rs. 600 million for the development of barracks and sanitation facilities at police stations and construction of official quarters.

It was disclosed during the discussion that steps are under way to grant promotions to 31,000 police officers, who have not been promoted for a long time, in three categories.

Minister Arjuna Ranatunga, Acting Inspector General of Police C. Wickramaratne, Senior DIGs and senior police officers were present at the discussion.
