Presidential Media Unit MESSAGE OF CONDOLENCE

I am deeply saddened to hear of the demise of the Most Venerable Prof. Bellanwila Wimalaratana Nayaka Thero, Chief Incumbent of the historic Bellanwila Rajamaha Vihara, Chancellor of the University of Sri Jayawardenepura, and former Anunayaka of the Shyamopalee Maha Nikaye Kalyani Samagri Dharma Maha Sangha Sabhawa.

Our Nayaka Thero with his broad understanding gained through an inclusive vision as well as the social maturity, played a pivotal role during his six decades of bhikkhu life, thus filling a whole chapter of the chronicle of the history of Sangha Sasanaya in Sri Lanka. The analysis made by the Nayaka Thero regarding any subject is rational, intelligent and scientific. Such kind of ability to acquire and apply knowledge and skills can only be acquired by studying the extensive principles of the teachings of the Buddha.

The brilliant vision of the Maha Nayake Thero regarding the national unity and peaceful reconciliation was unique due to his broad knowledge. Our Nayake Thero knew how to solve the current issues by extensively studying the Dharma, the Buddha’s teachings and applying them eruditely to the current issues.

I wish to record with great respect that the demise of the Most Venerable Prof. Bellanwila Wimalaratana Nayake Thero has taken place in an era where such kind of great exemplary religious leaders, who continued to establish close, cordial relations with the Maha Sangha of the Tri-Nikayas as well as with the other religious leaders are in need.

I wish the Most Venerable Prof. Bellanwila Wimalaratana Nayaka Thero, who nourished the society with Buddhist teachings while maintaining a close relation with the lay people listening to their grievances with warmth, displaying a great kindness towards animals and fulfilling respective duties towards the country at all times, may attain the supreme bliss of Nibbana.
