President Maithripala Sirisena emphasized that racketeers should not be allowed to destroy the lands of the country.
He said that ownership of the lands should be enjoyed by the public and a land policy must be rapidly implemented.
The President gave these instructions during a meeting held at the Presidential Secretariat regarding the amendments to the Land Act, today (20).
During this meeting, President Sirisena pointed out that the prime responsibility of the government should be to ensure the innocent farmers right to land, but not to strengthen the upper class and the smuggling businessmen.
President Sirisena also said that the land use laws in a country also should be enacted and the relevant conditions in this regard should not be removed under the new amendments.
Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, Ministers and MPs, including Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe, Rajitha Senaratne, P. Harrison, Gayantha Karunatilake, Daya Gamage, Ministry Secretaries and other government officials were present at the discussion.
