A series of special programmes were organized island-wide with the participation of the security forces for the fourth day of the National Drug Prevention Week launched under the guidance of the President with the aim of creating a drug free country, in parallel to the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.
The launch of the drug prevention time frame of the Eastern Province Programme was held under the patronage of Governor of the Eastern Province, Shan Wijayalal De Silva at the Trincomalee District Secretariat, today (27).
During the event, the police and the specialist doctors were apprised the public on the issues that can arise within the families due to drug addiction as well as the safety measures that can be followed to protect people against smoking and drug use.
School students, university students, public servants and rehabilitated drug-addicted persons participated on this occasion.
The Governor of the Eastern Province commended the unparalleled steps taken by the current President to eliminate the drug menace from the country, by implementing national programmes that no other leader was able to carry out.
A special academic lecture on how to avoid using drugs was held at the auditorium of the Army Hospital in Narahenpita under the patronage of Chairman of the National Dangerous Drugs Control Board, Professor Saman Abeysinghe.
