President Maithripala Sirisena said that since drug issue has become a major problem for the future of the nation, everyone should come together to win the challenge leaving aside differences. The President made these remarks attending a program held at Buonavista College, Galle, today (27).
The illegal drug smugglers are committing a huge damage to the country, similar to what was done by the terrorists as well as the colonial rulers, said the President.
The Bakmaha Divuruma, the pledge against would be undertaken by everyone in the country with the participation of ministers, government officers and school students, and with that pledge the whole country should work together to eradicate illegal drug smuggling, said the President.
The 200th Anniversary of Buonavista College, Galle was held under the patronage of the President today. The President who went to the college was warmly welcomed by the students.
The President who went to the SMART class room observed the activities of the students.
A NA”\ sapling was planted at the premises of the college by the President to mark the celebrating the 200th Anniversary.
Buonavista is the first college that was established as Buovnavista English missionaries while starting English education by the missionaries. The erudite scholars, Martin Wickremesighe, Prof.Senarath Paranavithana, Governor General Sir Oliver Gunethilake, Kala Keerthi Edwin Ariyadasa, former President of Maldives Abdul Gayoom, founder of Sarvodaya Dr. A.T. Ariyarathna and other great personalities received education at this school.
The gold plated awards were presented to the past pupils, including the above named great personalities.
Kala Keerthi Edwin Ariyadasa was presented a token of appreciation by the President.
The Principal of college K.Ganewatta presented a souvenir to the President and the President released the college periodical to mark its 200th Anniversary.
Member of Parliament, Mano Ganesan, Chief Minister of Southern Province Shan Wijeyalal De Silva, Provincial Ministers Chandima Rasaputra, Wijeyapala Hettiarachchi, public representatives, principal, staff, parents, past pupils and others were present in this event.
