President presented with historical books extracted from Ola leaves

Five books of history with rare facts hitherto unrevealed, extracted from Ola leaves of the days of yore, were handed over to President Mahinda Rajapaksa Tuesday May 30, at Temple Trees.

Editor Prof. Gananath Obeysekera, Head of the Department of Anthropology, Prinsted University USA, Mr. Bradman Weerakoon, Former Secretary to the President, co-editors, Ms. Nandana Weerarathna, Ananda Tissa Kumara and the publisher Mr. Godage were also among those who participated at the occasion.

The book titled “Christian Convention”, authored by Ven. Bentota Aththadassi Thero written prior to 1849 was observed to be an outstanding one proceeding the famous “Panadura Vadaya”.

The other four books belonged to the category of Vanni literature. The President on receiving these rare books pledged to initiate action to obtain permission from the British Government for perusal of our rare books deposited in the British Museum. He also promised to make necessary funds available for the preparation of a list of such important books presently available in our temples.
