Government condemns violence against innocent civilians- President

 

President Mahinda Rajapaksa today met with the Bishops of Jaffna and Mannar to discuss the situation of violence against civilians in the North East. Last evening 13 Sinhala villagers were cut and shot to death by suspected LTTE cadres, in a village around 10 km north of Welikanda in Polonnaruwa. On Saturday seven local visitors to the Wilpattu National park were killed when their vehicle was blown up by a landmine.

President appoints commission to probe weapons purchases

 

President Mahinda Rajapaksa appointed a commission to investigate the procurement of high-value weapons and military equipment during a five-year period (2000-2005) before he assumed office November last year. Although this is generally considered the laying of the foundation stone for the Norochcholai Coal Power Plant, in the deeper sense it is an occasion when we turn a new page in our history and culture. From this moment on we will be able to bring to an end the period of fears and doubts about an impending crisis in power supply. From this moment on we can have new expectations of the future. In other words, we, as a nation will now be able to breathe more freely.

President pledges Rs. 10 million towards the Kotmale Maha Seya

 

President Mahinda Rajapaksa donated Rs. 5 million from the D A Rajapaksa Foundation towards the completion of the Kotmale Maha Seya, the construction of which was started in 1983, to compensate the destruction of 46 Seya which were destroyed due to the accelerated Mahaweli project.

SLBC to transmit live programmes from India, for Buddha Jayanthi

 

President Mahinda Rajapaksa was today briefed on the special live programmes to be broadcasted simultaneously to Sri Lanka from India to mark the 2550 Buddha Jayanthi. On the 11, 12, 13 May the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Cooperation (SLBC) will broadcast the live Buddha Pooja, religious discussions and Dharma Deshana at Buddagaya.
