UNHCR Chief briefs President on northeast tour

United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Antonio Guterres who arrived in the island to visit displaced people in the north and east and to hear first hand their concerns and needs, yesterday toured the northeast to asses the plight of the people and meet with the LTTE. He met with President Mahinda Rajapaksa prior to his tour.

This morning he once again met with the President to discuss his assessment of the situation in the northeast and his meeting with LTTE Political Wing Leader S P Thamilselvam.

The UNHCR Chief told the President that his organization with the Ministry of Disaster Management and Human Rights would implement programs that would benefit the thousands of displaced people in the northeast.

Minister of Disaster Management and Human Rights Mahinda Samarasinghe and SCOPP Chief Dr. Palitha Kohona also participated in the discussion.
