August 11, 2006 - 10.45 GMT]

1189 tsunami victims of Dehiwala, Moratuwa and Usvatakeyawa areas who lost their homes will receive compensation money Monday, August 14 at Temple Trees. The recipients will receive Rs. 250, 000 to purchase a land and a further Rs. 250, 000 to purchase the required building material.

Though post tsunami reconstruction work on roads, bridges, fisheries harbours, rail tracks, electricity and on the water system happened speedily, the construction of houses was delayed due to the difficultly of obtaining land.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa pledged to give houses to the victims who lost their homes by the second anniversary of the tsunami that struck the island December 26, 2004. RADA has already commenced work to ensure this pledge becomes a reality.
