I am pleased to address this meeting of the Asia Society. Many of my predecessors have also addressed you. Yours is a very special institution. This city which seems an image of globalization has drawn millions of people to it through the centuries. This is the birth place of billions worth of capital and trillions of ideas. The Asia Society which is situated in such a background is a place which nurtures the Asian vision, so essential for the modern world. Therefore, I am pleased to be able to use the opportunity to address the United Nations, to also participate, even in a small way, in this forum of yours. Madam President, while thanking you for your invitation I commend you for your leadership.

“Our government firmly believes that terrorism cannot be eliminated through military means alone. We remain fully committed to talking with the LTTE either directly or through a facilitator. It is our hope that the LTTE will transform itself from a terrorist outfit to one that is committed to dialogue and democracy. Our government stands ready to respond to any display of goodwill and a move towards a non-violent approach,” said President Mahinda Rajapaksa addressing the 61st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York today (20).

Security forces compelled to take defensive measures -President to Kofi Annan

 

President Mahinda Rajapaksa has told UN Secretary General Kofi Annan that the Sri Lankan security forces had been compelled to take measures to defend themselves in the face of widespread provocations by the LTTE.

President Rajapaksa and Mr. Kofi Annan are in Havana, Cuba, participating in the 14th Summit Conference of the Non-Aligned Movement.

Renew commitment to fight terrorism – President at NAM Summit

 

“Let us call upon the Non-Aligned Movement as well as the United Nations to strongly renew the commitment to fight terrorism whenever and wherever it decides to raise its ugly head. At the same time all of us together need to find innovative means and ways to combat terrorism, as it poses a grave threat to the political and economic well-being, sovereignty and territorial integrity of nation States.”

So said President Mahinda Rajapaksa addressing the XIVth Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) in Havana , Cuba . He was addressing the Plenary Session of the Non-Aligned Summit yesterday (September 15).

President Rajapaksa to arrive at Havana later today

 

President Mahinda Rajapaksa who left the country to attend the 14th sessions of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) is expected to arrive at the Jose Marti International Airport in Havana later today. (September 14, 2006).  

President Rajapaksa is scheduled to attend the discussion of the G15 countries the same afternoon. The G15 Group was formed after the Non-Aligned Movement’s sessions in Cairo and now it consists of 17 member nations. Algeria, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Egypt, India, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Jamaica, Kenya, Nigeria, Malaysia, Mexico, Peru, Senegal, Venezuela and Zimbabwe are the members.
