SRI LANKA FREEDOM PARTY AND THE UNITED NATIONAL PARTY
TO COOPERATE ON KEY ISSUES VITAL FOR THE NATION’S

Preamble
:
This Memorandum of Understanding
between the Sri Lanka Freedom Party and the United National
Party represents the inauguration of a new political
environment eagerly awaited by the public of this country,
which replaces the hitherto existing policies of confrontation
with the politics of active cooperation on national
issues, in the interests of the nation.

|
|
The two main political parties the Sri Lanka Freedom
Party (SLFP) and United National Party (UNO) signed
a historic MOU today, a little after 12 noon, at Temple
Trees. President Mahinda Rajapaksa and Opposition Leader
Ranil Wickremasinghe were also present at the signing.

US Assistant Secretary of State Boucher
calls on President |
|
|
Assistant Secretary of State
for South and Central Asian Affairs Richard Boucher
called on President Mahinda Rajapaksa today during an
official visit he is undertaking to Sri Lanka today
and tomorrow. Assistant Secretary Boucher reiterated
the condemnation of the United States of the LTTE’s
acts of violence, particularly the suicide bomb attack
in Habarana on October 16, killing more than 100 unarmed
Naval officers and civilians and the attack on the Naval
Base in Galle yesterday (18).

Lanka’s Ambassador to Oman Meerasahib Maharoof
carried a written message from the President to the
Sultanate of Oman requesting for an allocation of a
plot of land in Muscat, to construct a Buddhist temple.

|
|
|
Twenty One members of the Colombo Municipal Council
led by its Mayor Mr. Uvais M. Imitiyas and Deputy Mayor
Mr. S. Rajendra joined the Sri Lanka Freedom Party today.
They obtained membership of the SLFP from its leader
President Mahinda Rajapaksa, at Temple Trees.

Mahinda Rajapaksa on Saturday visited the funeral houses
of two soldiers who died during the Muhamalai battle
with the LTTE. Disregarding security advice the President
paid surprise visits to the villages of Nawagathegama
in Anamaduwa and Sangapaliya in Galgamuwa to pay his
last respected to Sergeant Jayasundera and private H
M Nandasiri.

Family that sacrificed two sons for the
country meets with President |
|
|
President
Mahinda Rajapaksa invited to the Presidential Secretariat
Sumathipala Abeysiriwardena, a father of 10 and his
family. Two of his sons died fighting for their motherland
during the Mavilaru and Muhamalai battles. The President
who was moved by the family’s loss offered them
assistance. During the lengthy discussion the President
inquired into their needs and instructed Foreign Minister
Mangala Samaraweera who was also present to provide
employment to one son.
