President details growth at Economic Forum 2007

 

"Against all these challenges [of terrorism, heavy rains, floods and earth slips etc.] and complexities in our political economy, our Government sustained an economic growth in excess of 7 percent during 2006 - a further improvement from the growth of 6.2 percent in 2005. Unemployment declined to 6 percent. We have seen an export growth of around 8 percent. We have attracted overseas remittances of over 2 billion US Dollars. We managed to attract foreign investment in excess of 500 million US Dollars - twice the level of annual FDIs in our country. Income from tourism exceeded 400 million US Dollars," said President Mahinda Rajapaksa addressing the inaugural session of the Sri Lanka Economic Forum - 2007, at Galle today.

New Cabinet of Ministers sworn in

 

President Mahinda Rajapaksa today carried out the first reshuffle of the Cabinet since he assumed office in November 2005.

Fifty one Members of Parliament were sworn in as Cabinet Ministers before the President at the assembly hall of the Presidential Secretariat.

Moragahakanda waters will douse fires of communalism in North and East - President Rajapaksa

 

“What we will win from this Moragahakanda Maha Samudra are the lives of people of the North Central Province and those in the North and East. Remember that what we will douse from the waters released from Moragahakanda to the North and East is the fire of communalism spread in those two areas by deadly terrorism,” said President Mahinda Rajapaksa addressing the large gathering present at the launch of the Moragahakanda Reservoir Project today.

Government will never privatize water resource - President

 

"The government will never sell our precious water resource, and it will
never be made use of as a commercial commodity or privatized to bridge our budget deficit" said President Mahinda Rajapaksa commissioning the initial stage of the Greater Kandy Water Supply Project at Katugastota from "Temple Trees' yesterday (Jan 08, 07).

Democracy to N & E highest priority - President

 

"Restoring democracy to the people in the North and East is a matter of the highest priority for the Government," said President Mahinda Rajapaksa addressing Media Heads and Editors of Private and State media institutions at "Temple Trees" today.

The Government is also fully committed to provide a political solution to the conflict in the North and East, the President said.

Health care - 2500 nurses to be newly recruited

 

Under Phase I of the program to recruit 15,000 nurses in the Health sector, 2500 nurses were recruited today (Jan. 04). Symbolizing this 490 trainee nurses were given their letters of appointment by President Mahinda Rajapaksa at Temple Trees this morning (Jan. 04).

“Let’s resolve to start a new journey with hopes”, President tells his staff in the New Year

 

President Mahinda Rajapaksa, in his address to his staff today (January 02) at the Presidential Secretariat said that all should resolve to provide an efficient service to the people who come to get a job done and the officers of the Presidential Secretariat particularly should set an example to other government institutions by discharging their duties efficiently.
