The President recalled his commitment and efforts
to provide
adequate facilities to the Madhu
pilgrims from the time he was a minister, and said he
would assure the bishops that he would make all
arrangements for a secure environment for pilgrims to
freely engage in religious activities at Madhu.
The bishops were informed by the
President that when he met the Vatican Secretary of
State Cardinal Tarcisco Bertone during his recent visit
there, his attention had been drawn to the facilities
and security provided to the Madhu pilgrims. The President
had informed the Cardinal that as Prime Minister he
was prevented from visiting Madhu Church due to security
considerations and the attitude of the LTTE.
In the cordial discussion that
took place, President Rajapaksa requested the bishops
to visit the North and East to see the development and
resettlement activities being carried out there by the
Government.
