Mahinda Rajapaksa who is in Geneva to attend the 96th
Session of ILO yesterday met the UN High Commissioner
for Human Rights Ms. Louis Arbour. She appreciated the
steps taken by the President to ensure human rights
in the context of the violent conflict that is raging
in Sri Lanka.
President Rajapaksa also met President of the UN Human
Rights Council Luis Alfonso who stressed the need to
continue the cooperation between the Council and the
government of Sri Lanka. Alfonso also commended the
President for appointing a Presidential Commission to
investigate human rights violations and for appointing
an International Group of Eminent Persons to oversee
the work of the Commission.
President Rajapaksa
also met Vice President of the International Red Cross
Society Jaques Forster. He thanked the ICRC for its
tsunami assistance projects and pledged to provide all
facilities including full security to the ICRC to function
in Sri Lanka.
Jaques Forster appreciated the steps taken by the President
to investigate into the abduction and murder of two
Red Cross volunteers and bring the perpetrators of the
crime before Courts. |
