Office of the Cabinet Minsters

The Cabinet of Sri Lanka is the council of ministers that form the central government of Sri Lanka. It is responsible to and answerable to parliament. As of 19 January 2016 the cabinet had 46 members – president, prime minister and 44 ministers. There are also 13 state ministers and 23 deputy ministers who are not members of the cabinet (in addition one cabinet minister is a state minister and a deputy minister).

“There shall be a Secretary to the Cabinet of Ministers who shall be appointed by the President. The Secretary shall, subject to the direction of the President, have charge of the office of the Cabinet of Ministers, and shall discharge and perform such other functions and duties as may be assigned to him by the President or the Cabinet of Ministers.”

Hon. Ranil Wickremesinghe was sworn in as the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka for the fourth time on 21st August 2015.He is the Leader of the United National Party (UNP), Sri Lanka’s largest political party, which is a constituent member of the National Unity Government led by H.E. the President Maithripala Sirisena. Hon. Wickremesinghe was first appointed as the Prime Minister from 1993 – 1994 after the assassination of President Ranasinghe Premadasa. He was also elected as the Prime Minister from 2001 – 2004 when the United National Front Government won the general elections in 2001.

Ministry of Defence

The Ministry of Defence is the Sri Lankan government ministry responsible for implementation of government defence policy and the headquarters of the Sri Lankan Armed Forces.

The Ministry of Defence states that its principal objectives are the formulation, co-ordination and the execution of policies in relation to the national security. With the end of the Cold War, the MOD does not foresee any short-term conventional military threat, the main threat to Sri Lanka having been the now-defunct terrorist organization, the LTTE). The Ministry of Defence also manages day-to-day running of the armed forces, contingency planning and defence procurement.

The National Security Council of Sri Lanka is the executive body of the Sri Lankan government that is charged with the maintenance of national security with authority to direct the Sri Lankan military and Police. The Ministry of Mahaweli Development and Environment

The Ministry of Mahaweli Development and Environment of Sri Lanka remains committed for the management of the environment and natural resources of the country, maintaining the equilibrium between the trends in rapid economic development and use of natural resource base.

Social and economic behavior of the increasing human population has put a major threat in achieving these objectives. The ministry has framed key policies for adoption in management of environment and natural resources of the country. These policies are implemented with the participation of stakeholders including government, agencies, NGO’s and communities.
