The special ceremony to celebrate the fortieth anniversary of Science College, Mount Lavinia was held under President Maithripala Sirisena’s patronage today (11th of June).
The President was warmly welcomed and escorted by the students of the college, when he arrived at the school.
The building constructed for the activities of the primary section and the “Suhuru” classroom building under the National programme, “Nearest school is the best school” was also opened by the President.
The “Vidyabhimani” commemoration plaque was presented to President Sirisena at the official function held afterwards.
Awards and certificates were presented by the President to the outstanding students of the college.
A wheel chair was gifted to a handicapped female student of the college.
Symbolizing the arrival of President Sirisena, a Na Sapling was planted at the college premises.
As per a request made by Ms. Vivian Gunewardena when she was a Member of Parliament in the 1970‘s, Science College, Mount Lavinia was established under the sponsorship of former Minister of Education Badi-ud-din Mahamud and Minister Pieter Keuneman.
“Science is the future” is the motto of this college in which studies are conducted in both Sinhala and English medium and nearly two thousand students are studying in this college.
State Minister Mohan Lal Grero, Deputy Minister Eran Wickramaratne, Western Provincial Education Minister Ranjith Somawansa, and other public representatives of the province Principal of the College Mr.Susantha Mendis, and the staff, parents, and past pupils were present in this event.
