There is a clear progress in the field of Agriculture today in the country and the current government has accomplished a considerable amount of work with regard to agricultural development in the past three years which no other previous government had done.
President Maithripala Sirisena made these statements participating in the closing ceremony of 30th Mahaweli Sports Festival held in Ambilipitiya Mahaweli Stadium today (Sept 16).
Agriculture has been the base of prosperity of the country since ancient reign of kings and the future of the country could be built keeping faith in an agriculture based economy, President Sirisena said.
He said that all the benefits will be provided as a government, towards strengthening the Mahaweli farmer Community which contributes specially towards the production process of the country and the contribution made through Mahaweli to the country through different fields should be greatly appreciated.
The Mahaweli Sports Festival which is held annually to enhance the sports abilities of the Mahaweli Children and leads them towards winning in the international arena, held for the 30th time at the Mahaweli grounds, Ambilipitiya.
The Mahaweli Sports festival started yesterday under the theme, ”A self sufficient era- An invaluable value to Mahaweli youth” was held with the participation of 3000 sports men and women of 10 Mahaweli regions and this sports festival had 42 events that was limited only for the National sports festival.
Today within the closing ceremony the best sportsmen, sportswomen, best Mahaweli region, and the winning teams were presented with awards by the President.
The Sportsmen and Sports women who participated in the Mahaweli sports events were presented with special benefits while the Mahaweli region which becomes the first will be presented with a gymnasium, a land from Mahaweli for the best male and female sports persons, 10 sports scholarships for the sports men and women with outstanding talents, 20 professional scholarships for sports men and women, sports equipment for the college which produced the best sports men and women were presented at this sports festival.
The victorious national Netball team that won the Asian Championship were also present at this event where the President presented a special token of appreciation from Mahaweli and a special gift from the Dialog company to the volleyball team.
The Dialog company will also provide assistance for the Net ball team in their future endeavors in sports on an appeal made by the President.
Ministers Mahinda Amaraweera and Thalatha Atukotrala, State Minister Weerakumara Dissanayake, Chief Minister of Western province Isura Devapriya, Jagath Pushpakumara, and public representatives, Secretary to the President Udaya R. Senevirathne, Secretary of the Ministry of Mahaweli and Environment Anura Dissanayake, Director General of Mahaweli Sarath Chandrasiri Vithana and others were present in this event.
